Tsherin Sherpa is a Nepali artist who was trained in traditional Tibetan Zen Buddhist painting. His series "Spirits" explores traditional Buddhist figures in the modern world, reflecting the experiences of Tibetan diaspora. I find this style of painting really interesting. I want to learn more about how this style works. The crisp edges and patterns reminds me of digital art or collage. I'd love to see his process in person.
The themes of his work also spoke to me as a fellow Asian diaspora, but religion is something I haven't seen explored as much. Religion isn't very important in modern Chinese culture, especially not to my family, so seeing the other side of the spectrum is something new for me. And, in my area, the dominating religion is Christianity, with a handful of Muslims and Jews. Zen Buddhism is something I've never encountered before other than in history class. I hope to learn more about it in the future from the perspective of those actually practicing, so I can better understand their struggles with globalization, and by extension, Sherpa's art.
